Identify Employability Skills

Use the Government of Canada Employability Skills Page to view the skills, learn why they are important, and determine how you can continue to improve. Identify any 6 of the 9 skills that you used and developed during your NBTAP work term.

Detail Your Skill Development

For each of the 6 skills selected, provide a detailed description (minimum 80 words) of the job or task you completed that demonstrated this skill. Also describe how your practice of the skill has enabled improvement, and how this will make you a better employee going forward.

Example: Numeracy

This summer I worked as a Machinist. In this trade we are constantly using numbers and measuring to very accurate tolerances. In my summer work term, I was required to read technical drawings to get information needed to build parts. These drawings contained tolerances accurate to +/- 0.010” and the journeyperson I worked with said that often in other machining situations the tolerances are even finer! To measure with this level of accuracy, I had to learn how to read a vernier caliper and a micrometer. These tools enable you to measure accurately to 0.001”.

Learning this helped me in many ways. I am now able to read drawings and blueprints to find information. I can also use calipers and micrometers to measure. Both skills will help me greatly moving forward as a tradesperson. I will be more accurate and productive in my work with these new skills.

Create Your Skill Inventory

Begin a list of hands-on skills you developed through your summer work term. For each skill listed, provide a brief (2-4 sentences) description of a task you performed that used the skill. You will add to this list each school year as you progress throughout the program. This year, you must provide examples of 10 hands-on skills that you developed during your NBTAP work term. If you continue with your pre-apprenticeship next year, you will be required to add to this list.

Example: Drilling/Boring

This summer in my work term I had to use drill presses to drill or bore holes to a specific size. We used number and letter-stamped drill bits. I had never seen drill bits that were lettered before. These allow for more accuracy than traditional bits.

Example: Measuring

I used many measurement devices this summer in my work term. I used tapes, calipers, micrometers, drill indexes, lathe dials, and telescopic gauges. One day I was boring holes for a pin on a shaft. Once the hole was bored, I had to use a telescopic gauge to make sure it was within tolerance for the pin. The tolerance was +/- 0.010”.

Add to Your Skill Inventory

Return to your Skill Inventory. Add 5 new hands-on skills that you developed during the work term. You will need 15 hands-on skills in total for Apprenticeship Credit 2.

Deliver a Presentation

Develop and deliver a presentation to Grade 9 students that showcases your expertise in a specific skilled trade.

Presentation Details

To receive Apprenticeship Credit 2, you must develop a presentation on your work terms and pre-apprenticeship experience. You will present this to Grade 9 students.

The goal of the presentation is to showcase your expertise in a skilled trade, and you should view this as an opportunity to show leadership in the skilled trades pathway to learning.

The suggested format for the presentation is as follows:

Create a visual presentation of approximately 20 slides. Use visuals throughout the presentation and limit text. Include the following details:

  1. Information on NBTAP – what it is, and how you become involved. (1 slide)
  2. A description of the skilled trade you were involved in (for example, Machinist). (1 slide)
  3. Additional slides with picture collages that showcase your work and skill development. You may wish to look at the specific skills listed in your Skill Inventory and provide examples of how you practiced these skills, and/or describe any products you created by applying these skills. (10-15 slides)
  4. A closing remarks and questions period. (1 slide)
